NFC Forum Introduces Certification Release 15 for Enhanced Contactless Tech

The NFC Forum's new Certification Release 15 boosts contactless connections to 20mm, enhancing user experience and device interoperability.

Significant Upgrade in NFC Technology

The NFC Forum, the authoritative body for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, has announced the launch of its Certification Release 15 (CR15), which is set to transform the capabilities of contactless connections. This new certification aligns with the recently announced NFC Release 15 Technical Specification, introducing a testing program that allows devices to operate effectively at an extended range of up to 20mm. This advancement represents a fourfold increase over previous capabilities, aiming to enhance the user experience by making device alignment for connections less critical.

Collaboration Among Industry Leaders

The initiative is spearheaded by a diverse group of industry leaders, including major players such as Apple, Google, Huawei, Identiv, Infineon, NuCurrent, NXP Semiconductors, Sony, and ST Microelectronics. These organizations are committed to providing seamless and secure contactless interactions globally. The compliance with the NFC Forum specifications is intended to ensure that users experience intuitive, reliable, and consistent interactions with compliant devices.

Advancements in User Applications

According to Mike McCamon, Executive Director of the NFC Forum, the enhancement of NFC contactless connection ranges was highlighted in the Forum’s Five-Year Roadmap. He emphasized that CR15 will instill confidence in both manufacturers and users, asserting that devices operating within this extended range will perform reliably. This improvement paves the way for innovative applications, such as utilizing smartphones as digital car keys or smartwatches for public transport access. Moreover, the NFC Forum aims to support collaborative efforts with other industry groups, notably the Intelligent Car Connectivity Ecosystem Alliance (ICCE), which is working to develop a more dependable digital car key solution.

Ensuring Consistency Across Devices

The NFC Forum Certification Program is designed to evaluate product conformity with the latest NFC standards. Successful testing results in devices being recognized as Certified Compliant with NFC Forum Specifications. This standardization allows various associations and organizations utilizing NFC technology to foster interoperability and enhance user experiences. Arnaud Schreiner, Chair of the Forum’s Compliance Committee and Principal Technology Standards Architect at NXP Semiconductors, pointed out that a primary goal of CR15 was to cultivate a uniform user experience across all device categories. The certification mandates compliance with the new Operating Volume (OV20), while ensuring compatibility with existing devices that operate under the prior standard (OV5). This step is crucial for establishing a foundation for devices that may aim for even greater operational distances in the future.

Upcoming Educational Webinar

For those interested in learning more about Certification Release 15 and its implications for the future of NFC technology, the NFC Forum will host an informative webinar on October 28th. Interested parties can register through the NFC Forum website, where they can also access certified product listings and additional resources related to certification processes. The NFC Forum, founded in 2004, is a non-profit industry association dedicated to advancing the use of NFC technology through the development of specifications and educational initiatives, ensuring a reliable and secure user experience across the board.
