Oslo-based Riff Raises €14 Million in Series A Funding
In a significant development for the tech startup scene, Riff, a pioneering platform located in Oslo, has successfully raised €14 million during its Series A funding round. The funding was primarily spearheaded by Northzone, with additional contributions from several investors including Skyfall Ventures, Maki.vc, Sondo Capital, Global Founders Capital, and a new entrant, Illusian, led by Ilkka Paananen, the founder of Supercell. This latest round of investment elevates Riff’s total funding to €18.4 million since its inception in 2021, when it was originally branded as Databutton.
Transforming Application Development for Non-Technical Users
Riff’s mission centers on empowering non-technical users to create intricate, data-driven applications without the need for coding expertise. Recent findings from an MIT study highlighted that a staggering 95% of AI initiatives fail to reach production, underscoring the challenges that many organizations face. While several AI tools have emerged, they often falter when it comes to real-world application due to their complexity and scalability issues. Riff aims to tackle these hurdles by offering a platform that combines user-friendly design with a powerful infrastructure, allowing users—from small business owners to large enterprises—to develop functional AI applications. The platform features templates, expert advice, and pre-designed playbooks, attracting over 150,000 users to date.
Prominent companies such as Twilio and Cognite are already leveraging Riff to streamline their operations across various sectors including manufacturing, finance, logistics, healthcare, and consumer products. To further enhance its capabilities, Riff plans to introduce new features designed to facilitate the launch of AI applications and automations. These innovations include custom automations managed by AI agents, seamless integrations with essential SaaS tools like HubSpot, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Mixpanel, Stripe, and Notion, as well as background agents that enable users to implement significant changes and receive real-time updates directly on their mobile devices. Additionally, domain whitelisting for app authentication is set to bolster the security of internal applications.
Leadership Insights on Future Growth
Commenting on the funding success, Trygve Karper, the CEO and Co-founder of Riff, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of their platform. He noted that many users approach Riff after facing challenges with previous solutions that failed to deliver on their promises. By providing modular tools that offer immediate value, Riff has become a solution that helps users achieve success from the outset. Karper emphasized that this funding round is particularly exciting as it enables the company to extend its reach to a broader audience eager to harness the power of AI in practical applications.
Michiel Kotting, a partner at Northzone, also shared his perspective, highlighting the transformative nature of vibe coding in software development. He remarked that Riff distinguishes itself by focusing on equipping users with the tools necessary for real-world production creation, thus enabling a deeper integration of AI into everyday business operations.
Riff is committed to helping teams develop internal applications that yield tangible business results, moving beyond mere prototypes to deliver fully functional, tailored AI-driven solutions without the need for extensive IT support.
