### Zparq’s Commitment to Sustainable Marine Solutions
The marine industry has traditionally relied on internal combustion engines, facing mounting scrutiny over their environmental repercussions, maintenance expenses, and harmful emissions. Addressing these challenges head-on is Zparq, a Swedish deeptech company that is making strides in the development of innovative electric drivetrains. The firm was recently highlighted at the EIT InnoEnergy Business Booster event in Lisbon, where it announced the successful acquisition of €5.5 million in funding from the EIC Accelerator program. This program is known for its selective funding, awarding just 40 startups from over 1,000 applicants, and represents a vital step for Zparq as it embarks on the final stages of developing its groundbreaking Z10 platform.
### Innovative Technology and Sustainable Goals
Founded in 2020 by Jonas Genchel, Mikael Sundberg, and Sebastian Thune, Zparq emerged from a collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH). With extensive backgrounds in mechanics, electromechanics, and marine systems, the founders are dedicated to transforming marine propulsion through technology that prioritizes sustainability and efficiency. Their vision aims to revolutionize the sector by providing electric motors that are clean, quiet, and reliable, all while adhering to principles of circularity and sustainability. This commitment aligns with broader global decarbonization initiatives and the enhancement of aquatic ecosystems.
According to Genchel, the team has achieved significant advancements by completely redesigning the power supply in a compact motor that is reportedly ten times smaller than existing models while delivering comparable power output. He emphasized that their design has eliminated moving parts, including gears and seals, and incorporated an innovative cooling system that can function effectively alongside solar technology.
### Pioneering the Future of Marine Propulsion
The patented Z10 platform boasts some of the most compact and modular direct-drive electric motors in the industry, making it versatile enough for various vessels, from leisure crafts to high-demand commercial and rescue operations. This advanced technology not only minimizes raw material usage but also significantly cuts CO2 emissions during production through its lightweight and efficient architecture. Furthermore, the platform is equipped with sophisticated battery management and safety systems, along with theft-prevention features, thus setting new benchmarks for reliability and security in the marine sector.
Currently, Zparq is engaged in numerous pilot projects with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and boat builders to showcase the performance and scalability of its platform. With the newly secured EU funding, the company plans to finalize the development of the Z10 system, boost industrial production capabilities, and establish stronger global partnerships within the transportation sector. Zparq aims to enhance commercial availability by 2025, targeting increased market penetration across Europe and beyond, thereby contributing to a sustainable future for marine transportation.
