S2G Investments Launches $1B Fund for Climate Solutions

S2G Investments Launches $1 Billion Solutions Fund

Chicago-based S2G Investments has officially closed its $1 billion Solutions Fund I, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to addressing climate change through innovative solutions. This fund is the firm’s first focused specifically on growth-stage companies, bridging the critical funding gap between early-stage venture capital and large-scale infrastructure investments.

Addressing the ‘Missing Middle’

With an initial investment of $300 million already allocated to ten pioneering companies, the Solutions Fund I aims to fill what S2G describes as the ‘missing middle’—a funding void where established businesses with proven models often struggle to secure financing. Many of these companies are too mature for venture capital yet too nascent for traditional infrastructure funding.

Founded in 2014 by Aaron Rudberg, Chuck Templeton, and Sanjeev Krishnan, S2G Investments manages $2.8 billion in assets and has invested in over 120 companies. The firm emphasizes the importance of targeting sectors like food and agriculture, energy, and ocean health, which are crucial in tackling global climate issues.

Innovative Portfolio

The fund’s portfolio includes groundbreaking companies such as Urbint, an AI platform for utility risk management, and ANA, Inc., which develops hybrid generators with battery storage. Other notable investments include Exacto, a company enhancing herbicide performance, and Echandia, which supplies batteries for maritime applications.

Unlike many climate funds that concentrate on a single sector, S2G seeks opportunities at the intersection of food, energy, and ocean systems, recognizing that these areas are interconnected. For example, decisions in energy infrastructure can significantly affect the strength of food systems, while ocean health directly impacts agricultural cycles.

Strategic Support for Growth

S2G provides various types of financing, including growth equity and structured finance, often serving as a company’s first institutional investor. The firm’s team of over 60 experts collaborates with portfolio companies to offer operational advice, policy guidance, and partnership opportunities, all while utilizing AI tools to navigate complex market dynamics.

Rudberg stated, “This Fund expands our ability to provide the growth capital required to commercialize transformative technologies at a pivotal moment in the global economy.” As the Solutions Fund I continues to evolve, S2G Investments is poised to play a crucial role in accelerating impactful solutions for a sustainable future.
