Sweden Ballistics Raises €30 Million to Tackle TNT Shortage
Sweden Ballistics, a Swedish defence manufacturing startup, has successfully raised €30 million in equity funding aimed at constructing a state-of-the-art TNT production facility in Nora, Sweden. This facility marks the first new TNT plant to be established in Europe since the end of the Cold War, highlighting the urgent need for increased ammunition production amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
Key Investors Drive the Initiative
The funding round was backed by notable figures including former Swedish chief of army Major General Karl Engelbrektson, Pär Svärdson, founder of Apotea and Adlibris, and Thomas von Koch, a founding member and former CEO of EQT. Their involvement underscores the critical necessity for Europe to bolster its defence capabilities following recent conflicts in Ukraine and escalating tensions surrounding Iran.
Addressing Europe’s Ammunition Supply Issues
The urgency for a reliable source of energetic materials like TNT has never been greater, as current suppliers struggle to meet demand. Presently, Nitro-Chem in Poland is one of the few major producers aligned with NATO, but much of its 10,000-tonne annual capacity is committed to long-term contracts. This shortage has led many European manufacturers to rely on imports, creating vulnerabilities in supply chains due to geopolitical risks.
A Vision for the Future
Founded in 2024 by Joakim Sjöblom and Carl Duforce, Swebal aims to produce over 4,000 tonnes of TNT annually once operations commence in 2028. The facility is designed to operate continuously, utilizing materials and equipment sourced within Europe to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. “Swebal’s 4,000 metric tonnes will help close the supply gap, but Europe still needs to enhance its sovereignty in energetic materials,” Sjöblom remarked, emphasizing the long-term vision for European defence independence.
As Europe shifts its focus to self-reliance in defence production, the establishment of this new facility represents a significant step toward mitigating the risks associated with current supply chains and ensuring the continent’s military preparedness for future challenges.
