Fox has finalised its acquisition of streaming technology company Roku in a deal valued at $22 billion. The transaction, first announced in June, closed far sooner than the companies had projected when they said completion was likely to come in 2027.
The agreement gives Fox a larger role in the US television market through Roku’s streaming devices, smart-TV operating system and advertising technology. Based on audience scale, the acquisition places Fox among the three largest television players in the country.
Roku to remain available to competing services
In its announcement, Fox said Roku will continue operating as an open platform for the streaming business. The statement suggests that third-party apps, including services competing with Fox in news, sports and entertainment, will remain available on Roku devices and televisions.
The issue is relevant because Roku serves as a gateway to a wide range of streaming applications. Its platform hosts both subscription-based and free advertising-supported services, allowing viewers to use content providers without being tied to a single media company.
By maintaining that arrangement, Fox appears to be seeking the commercial benefits of Roku’s distribution network without removing other publishers from the platform. The company did not indicate that competitors would face changes in their access to Roku’s software or streaming hardware.
Fox gains access to 100 million US households
Although Roku operates internationally, its strongest market remains the United States. The company says it reaches viewers in around 100 million American households, giving it a substantial presence in connected television.
That reach is central to the value of the acquisition. Fox already owns television, sports and digital media assets, while Roku provides access to smart-TV users and data linked to advertising and viewing patterns.
For Fox, the purchase adds another route to audiences beyond traditional cable and satellite distribution. Streaming platforms have become increasingly important as viewers shift towards on-demand programming and internet-connected television sets.
Fox News remains a major audience driver
Fox Corporation is widely known for Fox News, alongside its sports and streaming operations. Fox News is generally described as a right-leaning news outlet and continues to hold a large share of the cable news audience in the United States.
According to the information released with the deal, Fox News attracts more viewers than its two closest rivals, MS NOW and CNN, combined. The addition of Roku could help Fox strengthen the distribution and advertising side of its media operations while preserving the platform’s existing multi-provider model.
The transaction’s rapid completion also stands out. Major acquisitions of this size often require lengthy regulatory and operational processes, but Fox and Roku concluded the deal within roughly five months of its announcement.
