China will transport a foreign astronaut to its national orbital facility for the first time in the country's spaceflight history. According to a formal announcement from the CMSA, the state space agency of China, a Pakistani specialist has been selected to join the upcoming Shenzhou-24 crew.

The specific of the selected crew member remains unconfirmed at this stage. The CMSA declined to provide further details regarding the individual astronaut assigned to the flight.

Despite the lack of an official name from the agency, previous reports have potential candidates. Earlier information indicated that two individuals, Muhammad Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud, were officially selected to undergo specialised space training within China.

Bilateral Agreements Between China and Pakistan

The inclusion of a foreign astronaut highlights the relationship between the two Asian nations. China and Pakistan maintain close cooperation across multiple economic sectors, with particular emphasis on cross-border trade and financial investments.

This bilateral partnership extends into their respective aerospace sectors. The two governments previously established formal agreements that explicitly outlined the future participation of Pakistani astronauts in Chinese space missions.

The upcoming orbital flight will serve as the practical execution of these established agreements. The mission is scheduled to depart for the Tiangong space station later this year, though the CMSA has not yet published an exact launch date.

Tiangong Orbital Station Operations

The Chinese space station, whose name Tiangong translates to Celestial Palace, operates in low Earth orbit. The facility continuously circles the planet at an operational altitude of approximately 400 kilometres.

This specific orbital height closely matches the trajectory currently maintained by the International Space Station, which is commonly referred to as the ISS.

The Tiangong facility has sustained a permanent human presence for several years. According to operational records, the complex has been continuously inhabited by rotating crews since 2022.

The complete space station architecture consists of three distinct modules. The primary section is named Tianhe, which translates to Celestial Harmony. The remaining two modules are known as Wentian, meaning Quest for the Heavens, and Mengtian, which translates to Dreaming of the Heavens.

Chinese Space Investment Programme

The scheduled Shenzhou-24 mission represents another step in a heavily funded national aerospace programme. China continues to invest substantial financial resources into its space exploration capabilities.

The nation has achieved several major technological milestones over the past two decades. China successfully launched its first human into space in 2003, establishing its independent crewed spaceflight capabilities.

Following this achievement, the country secured a major lunar milestone in 2019. China became the first nation in history to successfully land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon.

Two years later, in 2021, the national space programme expanded its interplanetary reach. The space agency successfully deployed an uncrewed rover onto the surface of Mars.

Looking beyond the current operations aboard the Tiangong station, the agency maintains ambitious targets for deep space exploration. China aims to execute a crewed lunar landing mission within the coming years.
