Applications for the Ford Auto Tech Scholarship rose by 55% in 2026, reaching more than 6,800 applicants across 42 states, according to program details released by Ford Philanthropy. Offered in partnership with Ford dealers and the TechForce Foundation, the scholarship program awards 800 aspiring automotive technicians a $5,000 scholarship annually to cover educational and living expenses.

Regional Demand Surges Amid Automotive Workforce Shortages

The surge in candidate submissions coincides with nationwide labor shortages in the automotive trade sector. According to data from the State of the Skilled Trades Report, nearly 18,000 auto technicians are expected to retire over the next decade.

Regional interest in technical training showed sharp local increases during the 2026 application cycle. Submissions more than doubled in Southern California, while candidate applications tripled across Kansas City and Houston.

Demographic Shift and Non-Tuition Financial Assistance

Demographic data from the applicant pool indicates an expanding interest among career-changing adults. Candidates aged 18 to 21 accounted for the majority of submissions, yet applicants aged 22 or older made up 40% of the overall applicant total.

The financial awards provide funding for wrap-around student support services alongside standard tuition costs. According to Ford Philanthropy, nearly 1 in 3 scholarship recipients utilized their funding to cover transportation expenses, while 1 in 4 recipients applied the funds toward living costs. Recipients also applied grant money toward required tools and professional certification fees.

Participation data for the annual scholarship cycle will continue to track recipient outcomes as student cohorts complete their training programs across participating institutions.
