Front Ventures Launches €5M Fund for Defence Startups in Europe

Front Ventures Secures €5 Million for Defence Innovation

In a significant move to bolster defence technologies across Europe, Front Ventures, a Stockholm-based investment firm, has successfully raised €5 million through an oversubscribed rights issue of B-shares. This funding aims to support startups in the defence sector, particularly those innovating in Ukraine and Sweden.

Focus on Proven Technologies

The public investment company concentrates on technologies that have already demonstrated their effectiveness in operational settings. Areas of interest include software, drones, communications, and defence supply chains. The recent funding round was oversubscribed by an impressive 278%, attracting participation from major shareholders, including CEO Jonas Malmgren and board member Johan Lund, a former CEO of the firm.

Investment Strategy and Goals

With a strategic shift towards defence technology since its founding in 2012, Front Ventures is now equipped with a specialized team bringing together military, industrial, and entrepreneurial expertise. The company is focused on early-stage firms that possess working prototypes and are poised for commercial expansion. According to Malmgren, “We’re seeing a generation of defence companies that have effectively skipped the lab phase. Their products are tested in the harshest environments imaginable, iterated at speed, and proven to work. The problem isn’t innovation; it’s that the West has been too slow to fund and scale it.”

Targeting NATO-Aligned Markets

Investment amounts from the recent raise will vary from €200,000 to €2.5 million for each company. Front Ventures has already pinpointed two additional investments in the defence technology sector, with specifics yet to be disclosed. Their current portfolio includes innovative firms such as SkyHunter, which specializes in target allocation systems for drone interceptors, and Aeromotors, a Ukrainian manufacturer producing drone propulsion systems for NATO-aligned markets.

Accelerating Innovation in Defence

Additionally, Front Ventures is an approved investor for Brave1, a Ukrainian government-backed platform that connects startups with military users and investors. This collaboration provides Front Ventures access to battlefield-tested technologies and accelerates the validation process compared to traditional European defence procurement systems. The recent €5 million raise will further enable Front Ventures to support the burgeoning defence technology landscape in Europe.
