Nestlé Taps Philipp Navratil as CEO After Ethical Probe Ousts Freixe

Nestlé has named insider Philipp Navratil its new CEO, replacing Laurent Freixe after an internal probe found a conduct violation. The change aims to reinforce governance amid investor concerns.

Leadership Shake-up Follows Internal Investigation

Swiss food and beverage titan Nestlé has undergone a significant leadership change, appointing Philipp Navratil as its new Chief Executive Officer. The decision follows the swift departure of Laurent Freixe, whose tenure of less than a year ended after an internal investigation confirmed he had breached the company’s Code of Business Conduct.

The probe, overseen by Chairman Paul Bulcke and lead independent director Pablo Isla, concluded that Freixe had failed to disclose a romantic relationship with a direct report. In a statement, Bulcke emphasized that the board’s action was crucial “to uphold Nestlé’s values and reinforce its governance principles,” while also acknowledging Freixe’s long service to the company.

A Veteran Insider to Steer the Ship

Philipp Navratil is a seasoned Nestlé veteran, having joined the company in 2001. His extensive experience includes leadership roles across various key divisions and markets:

  • Head of the Nespresso division
  • Global Head of Strategic Business for Nescafé and Starbucks brands
  • Market Head for the coffee and beverage business in Mexico
  • Head of Operations in Central America

Having joined the Executive Board on January 1, 2025, Navratil is seen as a leader with deep knowledge of Nestlé’s global operations. Upon his appointment, he expressed his full commitment to pursuing the company’s established strategic goals and performance targets.

Navigating Investor Scrutiny

While Nestlé has asserted that its corporate strategy remains unchanged, the sudden transition has sparked concern among investors. This marks the second abrupt CEO succession in the past year, raising questions about leadership stability at the multinational corporation.

Freixe, who had been with Nestlé for nearly four decades and succeeded Mark Schneider in September 2024, will depart without a severance package. The company now looks to Navratil’s steadying hand to reassure stakeholders and maintain its performance trajectory.
