Vendep Capital Secures €80 Million for AI-Driven SaaS Investments

Finnish venture firm Vendep Capital raises €80 million for AI-first SaaS startups in the Nordics and Baltics, focusing on early-stage investments.

Vendep Capital Closes Fourth Fund to Boost AI-Focused Startups

Vendep Capital, a prominent venture capital firm based in Finland, has successfully concluded its fourth fund, amassing a total of €80 million. The financing comes from several notable sources, including the state-owned investment company Tesi, Elo, family offices, and angel investors. This fund is specifically aimed at supporting startups that prioritize artificial intelligence (AI) within the B2B Software as a Service (SaaS) sector, particularly those emerging from the Nordics and Baltics.

Since launching in 2013, Vendep Capital has established a strong foothold in the SaaS landscape, investing in various successful companies such as AlphaSense, Hostaway, Leadfeeder, and Happeo. According to Sakari Pihlava, one of the founding partners, the firm is enthusiastic about continuing its mission, noting that the Nordics and Baltics represent some of the most fertile grounds globally for cultivating software companies that can define entire categories. He emphasized that Vendep is uniquely equipped to collaborate with the next generation of founders who are driving this sector’s growth.

Comprehensive Support Beyond Capital

The expertise of the Vendep team extends beyond mere financial investment. The firm offers invaluable mentorship, fosters community engagement, and provides access to a vast global network to its portfolio companies. Their investment strategy spans the early funding stages, from pre-seed to Series A rounds, with initial investments typically falling between €0.1 million and €3 million. Sami Ahvenniemi, General Partner at Vendep, expressed that while SaaS might not be considered the most glamorous investment theme, its consistent performance makes it an attractive option. He highlighted the reliability of SaaS companies in generating predictable recurring revenues and maintaining industry-leading profit margins.

With the integration of AI, the landscape of SaaS is undergoing transformative changes. Ahvenniemi pointed out that nearly all significant AI products are now delivered and monetized as SaaS. He further elaborated that AI technologies are enabling companies to address challenges on a larger scale, adapting and improving with each use case. However, he emphasized that the foundational principles of building resilient businesses remain unchanged. The ongoing success of companies will still hinge on establishing long-term competitive advantages.

Future Investments and Strategic Focus

As Vendep Capital looks to the future, the firm aims to invest in approximately 20 early-stage SaaS ventures within the Nordics and Baltics. The priority lies with entrepreneurs who are creating defensible, AI-integrated platforms with aspirations for global expansion. In response to inquiries regarding their diversity strategy, Vendep has indicated a commitment to fostering a broad range of perspectives within their investment portfolio, further enhancing the growth potential of the companies they support. Through these efforts, Vendep Capital seeks to significantly contribute to the evolving landscape of AI-driven SaaS innovations.
