Pony.ai, a global leader in autonomous vehicle technology, and Mowasalat (Karwa), Qatar‘s primary transportation service provider, have announced a partnership to introduce autonomous vehicles to Qatari roads. This collaboration marks another significant step for Pony.ai in its global expansion.
Autonomous vehicle testing has commenced in Doha. Safety operators are present during this initial phase, which focuses on adapting the technology to Qatar‘s specific environment, including weather patterns, road infrastructure, and traffic flow.
Mowasalat, a company wholly owned by the Qatar Investment Authority and overseen by the Ministry of Transport, operates a vast transportation network across Qatar. Its extensive infrastructure and established presence make it an ideal partner for Pony.ai. This collaboration directly supports Qatar‘s National Vision 2030, a plan for sustainable national development.
Eng. Ahmed Hassan Al-Obaidly, CEO of Mowasalat, emphasized the importance of this initiative in achieving Qatar‘s long-term vision. He highlighted the successful integration of advanced technologies, following the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as a key component of enhancing transportation services and infrastructure.
Dr. James Peng, Chairman and CEO of Pony.ai, described the partnership as a crucial step in expanding the company’s global reach. He noted Qatar‘s unique environment presents valuable testing opportunities, and Mowasalat‘s local expertise is invaluable in creating a viable, scalable solution.
Pony.ai‘s technology uses a vehicle-agnostic Virtual Driver system that integrates software, hardware, and services to create a commercially viable autonomous driving solution. The company aims to make this technology widely accessible, building on its existing presence in China, Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. The Qatar initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
