The S&P Dow Jones Indices announced several additions and removals to the S&P 500 index, effective September 22nd. Robinhood Markets Inc., AppLovin Corp. (APP), and Emcor Group Inc. (EME) will join the benchmark index.
These additions will replace MarketAxess Holdings Inc. (MKTX), Caesars Entertainment (CZR), and Enphase Energy Inc. (ENPH). The S&P 500 committee considers various factors when selecting companies, including market capitalization, float market capitalization, and financial viability. Financial viability is determined by profitability based on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) over specified periods.
Robinhood‘s inclusion follows previous speculation surrounding its eligibility. While initially not selected during a prior quarterly rebalance, the company met the necessary criteria. AppLovin, a significant player in app monetization technology, was the largest eligible company by market capitalization at the time of the announcement. Emcor, a provider of construction and maintenance services, also secured a place in the index.
Several other companies, including MicroStrategy Inc. (MSTR), Astera Labs Inc. (ALAB), and Pure Storage Inc. (PSTG), were eligible but not selected for inclusion this time. MicroStrategy recently met financial viability requirements, while Astera Labs and Pure Storage met market capitalization thresholds. Pure Storage‘s stock had experienced significant growth in the preceding month, making it a potential candidate for promotion from the S&P MidCap 400 (MID).
The S&P 500 index committee’s decisions are not solely limited to scheduled quarterly rebalances. The committee frequently makes adjustments outside the typical schedule to reflect mergers and acquisitions or other significant corporate events. This dynamic approach ensures the index remains a relevant representation of the U.S. market. The committee’s actions often involve companies that are targets of mergers and acquisitions. These index changes are necessary to reflect the evolving landscape of the U.S. market.
