UK Sovereign AI Fund opens with £500M to back scaleups

UK launches Sovereign AI Fund to keep AI scaleups at home

The UK government will open its new Sovereign AI Fund this week, committing up to £500 million to help British AI companies scale without relocating abroad. The fund, backed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, is set to launch on April 16 at Wayve’s London headquarters.

James Wise, a partner at Balderton Capital, will chair the initiative while continuing his work as a venture capitalist. The fund was first proposed in the 2025 AI Opportunities Action Plan and later confirmed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves as part of a broader £2.5 billion programme spanning AI and quantum technologies.

More than capital: compute, customers, and commitments

Positioned as a co-investment platform, the fund aims to offer founders support beyond financing. The government says participating scaleups will gain improved access to national computing resources, including the Isambard-AI supercomputer in Bristol and Dawn in Cambridge. It also plans to expand routes into public procurement, a long-cited barrier for startups trying to sell into the state.

A cornerstone is an Advance Market Commitment worth up to £100 million, under which the government would act as a first customer for UK AI hardware developers once products meet defined performance thresholds.

Early investment and open questions

The fund has already deployed £8 million in seed financing to the OpenBind Consortium, which is building a molecular binding dataset designed to accelerate AI-driven drug discovery.

However, sceptics question whether £500 million is enough to compete globally. Analysts have noted that major US players are spending orders of magnitude more on AI infrastructure, raising concerns about the UK’s ability to prevent promising firms from moving to hubs such as San Francisco. The government said it will publish detailed investment criteria and governance information in the coming weeks.
