Bondstone expands from real estate into venture capital
Lisbon-based real estate group Bondstone has launched a venture capital arm, Bondstone Ventures, and registered its first fund, Maxwell Technologies I, with Portugal’s securities regulator, the CMVM. The fund is targeting €50 million from institutional investors to back seed and early-stage DeepTech startups across Southern Europe.
Focus areas: AI, computational biology and climate tech
According to details shared by the firm, the new vehicle will invest in early-stage companies working in AI, computational biology, climate technology and adjacent technical fields. The fund’s launch marks a significant shift for Bondstone, which has primarily operated as an integrated real estate investor and developer since 2016.
From a €1B property portfolio to startup investing
Bondstone said it has built a Portuguese real estate portfolio valued at more than €1 billion, spanning residential, logistics, hospitality and mixed-use projects. The company manages the full investment lifecycle and employs a team of around 20 professionals across multiple disciplines.
Venture partners and university deal flow
Bondstone Ventures plans to work with venture partners with experience at global technology companies. The firm also highlighted advisory support, including Luis Teixeira, described as having more than 20 years of experience across technology, e-commerce and fashion.
To source investments, the fund intends to partner with science and engineering universities, aiming to identify opportunities emerging from academic research and align researchers, founders and investors around long-term outcomes.
Regulated access to a less-funded region
With supervision by the CMVM, the fund is positioned as a regulated route for institutional capital to access venture opportunities in Southern Europe, a region that has historically attracted less venture activity than Northern Europe. No portfolio companies have been announced so far.
