Innovative Solutions for Surveillance Challenges
As climate change increasingly jeopardizes essential infrastructure and borders, conventional surveillance methods, such as helicopters, have proven to be both costly and inefficient. These traditional approaches face limitations, including the necessity of pilots and support teams, making them less viable for comprehensive monitoring needs. In response to these challenges, the French startup Rift has emerged with a groundbreaking solution: a sovereign, on-demand aerial intelligence network powered by autonomous drones and self-deploying stations operating on its proprietary RiftOS software. This innovative “Surveillance-as-a-Service” model significantly reduces operational costs, presenting a solution that can be up to ten times more economical than helicopter surveillance while ensuring that all data stays within European borders to maintain national security.
Funding Boost for Expansion and Development
On the heels of this innovative approach, Rift announced today that it has successfully secured €4.6 million in new funding. This financing includes €3 million in equity from investment firms AlleyCorp (USA) and OVNI Capital (France), in addition to €1.6 million in public support from the France 2030 initiative and Bpifrance. This capital will be instrumental in accelerating the production and deployment of their aerial intelligence network across Europe, positioning Rift as a key player in modern surveillance solutions.
Founders with Vision for Autonomous Infrastructure
Founded in 2023 by Daniel Nef and Dorian Millière, Rift aims to establish a resilient and fully autonomous European aerial intelligence infrastructure. Nef brings extensive experience in product management and technology leadership, having previously worked with OpenClassrooms. The co-founders seek to enhance the safety of territories, critical infrastructure, and populations. Their vision extends beyond mere surveillance; they aspire to provide timely and reliable real-time decision support for security forces and infrastructure operators. By bridging the gap between satellite data and ground personnel, they offer a rapid and cost-effective drone reconnaissance solution.
Revolutionizing Aerial Operations
The architecture of Rift’s technology includes internally designed long-endurance VTOL drones, autonomous deployment stations resembling shipping containers, and the RiftOS mission-control software platform. This setup facilitates complete remote operation without the need for pilots on-site, ensuring continuous 24/7 coverage through a rotational system. Unlike competitors like Alta Ares and Harmattan AI, Rift delivers a seamless and scalable solution specifically tailored for sensitive areas, including borders, coastlines, energy infrastructure, and industrial sites.
Future Plans and Workforce Expansion
Looking ahead, Rift plans to utilize the newly acquired funding to enhance the production of its autonomous drone stations through advanced manufacturing processes, aiming for large-scale, cost-effective deployment. The company has set an ambitious goal of achieving full mission-cycle automation by 2027, which will encompass planning, execution, anomaly detection, and reporting without human intervention. In line with its growth strategy, Rift aims to double its research and development, data science, certification, and manufacturing workforce by the end of 2026, further solidifying its position in the aerial intelligence sector.
