Teamsters Local 570 members employed by Zum Transportation in Jessup, Maryland, staged a rally to emphasize their demand for a fair first contract. The demonstration involved more than 300 drivers, attendants, and trainers responsible for transporting students in Howard County Public Schools.
Union officials highlighted the essential role these workers play in the community, emphasizing the daily responsibility of ensuring student safety and well-being. They expressed their belief that Zum should compensate its employees appropriately for their vital services. The union also urged Howard County leadership to support the workers’ efforts to secure a fair contract.
The workers’ decision to unionize earlier this year underscores their commitment to achieving better working conditions. The vote to join Teamsters Local 570 was overwhelmingly in favor of union representation.
One key issue in the ongoing negotiations is wages. Workers reported that their current compensation is inadequate for full-time work hours. They asserted that their dedication to their jobs and the children they transport deserves better financial recognition.
While Zum has agreed to provide back pay effective from the start of the 2025-2026 school year upon contract ratification, wages remain a significant point of contention. Further negotiations are scheduled for September to address this and other outstanding issues.
Teamsters Local 570 continues to advocate for its members, representing a diverse workforce across various industries in Baltimore and surrounding areas. The union’s website provides additional information about its activities and representation efforts.
