A recent WPTV news segment highlighted Zuko, a professionally trained mold detection dog, and his impact on indoor air quality inspections in Florida. Zuko‘s exceptional olfactory abilities allow him to locate mold hidden within building structures, surpassing the capabilities of traditional methods.
Zuko‘s work is part of a collaborative effort. His handler, Tim from Paws on Mold, guides the initial inspection, with Zuko pinpointing potential mold locations. Subsequent assessments are often handled by Full Spectrum Environmental, a Florida-based mold inspection and indoor air quality consulting firm. In other instances, Brittany Gordon of HEI Systems and Sporelytics conducts the diagnostic phase, using scientific methodologies to provide a thorough assessment. Green Fox Air Quality then completes the process with targeted remediation.
This integrated approach ensures homeowners receive complete solutions, from initial detection to final remediation. Experts praised Zuko‘s efficiency and accuracy. Brittany Gordon, a senior microbiologist, noted Zuko‘s ability to detect mold that might be missed by human inspectors or instruments. She explained that Zuko’s findings are then confirmed and quantified through in-depth air quality assessments and accredited lab testing.
Brett Brunsvold, president and founder of Full Spectrum Environmental, emphasized the increasing demand for accurate mold investigations, especially in homes with potential HVAC or water damage issues. He highlighted Zuko’s contribution to quicker, more precise inspections, building trust with homeowners. Justin Aristorenas, Full Spectrum Environmental’s Tampa Bay regional manager, similarly noted the growing acceptance of canine detection in Florida‘s modern approach to indoor air quality.
Brad Fishbein of Green Fox Air Quality expressed his surprise and admiration for Zuko’s capabilities after observing his work. He noted that Zuko and Tim work together to efficiently address clients’ concerns.
Tim explained that Zuko’s role is similar to that of a police K-9, but instead of narcotics, he detects hidden mold. This provides homeowners with crucial information about hidden mold sources which often go undetected by other means. The team’s combined efforts transform Zuko’s findings into actionable data, leading to effective remediation and peace of mind for families. This comprehensive approach addresses the pervasive issue of mold in Florida’s humid climate, contributing to healthier homes and communities.
