Xinhua‘s Kunming Forum on Global South Cooperation

Over 500 participants from 110 countries attended the Xinhua-hosted forum in Kunming. Discussions focused on strengthening Global South cooperation and reforming global governance, with Xinhua pledging collaboration. Melissa Fleming of the UN also addressed the event.

The 2025 Global South Media and Think Tank Forum convened in Kunming, China, bringing together approximately 500 representatives from over 110 nations. Participants hailed from various media outlets, think tanks, government agencies, and international organizations.

Hu Heping, deputy head of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee’s Publicity Department, highlighted the significance of China’s Global Governance Initiative in guiding Global South nations toward reforming the global governance system. He expressed confidence that the forum would foster greater communication and collaboration among attendees.

Fu Hua, president of Xinhua News Agency, emphasized Xinhua’s commitment to working with other parties to amplify the narratives of Global South leaders in building a shared future for humanity. He stressed the importance of enhancing research, disseminating key ideas, and utilizing multilateral platforms to support the development and prosperity of the Global South.

Khamphan Pheuyavong, a member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee, suggested that Global South media and think tanks explore collaborative avenues, such as information sharing, personnel exchanges, and effective storytelling.

In a pre-recorded message, Melissa Fleming, United Nations under-secretary-general for global communications, advocated for collective action to improve global sustainability, intercultural dialogue, and balance in the global information landscape. She also called for increased integrity in the online public sphere.

The forum, a joint initiative of Xinhua News Agency, the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee, and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government, concluded on Tuesday. The event aimed to facilitate discussions on key challenges and opportunities facing the Global South and promote collaborative solutions. The discussions covered a wide range of topics pertinent to the region’s development and international relations. The forum’s organizers expressed hope that the event’s outcomes would contribute to strengthening cooperation and mutual understanding among Global South nations.
