Viridien and TGS Begin Megabar Extension Survey

Viridien and TGS have started the Megabar Extension Phase I survey in Brazil's Barreirinhas Basin. This 5,300 sq km 3D seismic survey will leverage advanced imaging technology, providing crucial data for oil and gas exploration in a promising, underexplored area. Initial results are anticipated in 2026.

Viridien, a digital and Earth data company, and its joint venture partner TGS, a global leader in energy data, announced the launch of the Megabar Extension Phase I survey in the Barreirinhas Basin off the coast of northern Brazil.

This multi-client project encompasses a 5,300 square kilometer area and utilizes 3D seismic technology. The survey builds upon Viridien’s existing Megabar survey in the region. The Barreirinhas Basin’s geological similarities to successful areas in Guyana and Suriname, along with recent licensing activity, point to significant potential.

The survey will utilize TGS‘s Ramform Tethys vessel and GeoStreamer technology for high-quality data acquisition. Data acquisition is expected to run from early September to late November.

Viridien‘s subsurface imaging experts will process the data, employing cutting-edge time-lag full-waveform inversion (TL-FWI) and reverse time migration (RTM) technologies. These advanced techniques aim to provide a clearer understanding of the basin’s geological structure.

Preliminary imaging results are expected by the third quarter of 2026, with final data anticipated by the first quarter of 2027. This data is expected to reveal new exploration opportunities and help reduce exploration risks.

TGS CEO Kristian Johansen highlighted the company’s commitment to providing high-quality data for exploration in Brazil‘s equatorial margin. He expressed confidence that the project will attract considerable interest from clients.

Sophie Zurquiyah, CEO of Viridien, emphasized the significance of the Megabar Extension survey in unlocking exploration potential in the Barreirinhas Basin. She stated that this project will provide clients with a significant advantage in this strategically important and relatively unexplored area. The project benefits from industry funding.

Viridien is an advanced technology company focusing on Earth data and digital solutions. The company employs approximately 3,200 people globally and is listed on Euronext Paris under the ticker VIRI.
