smart, the premium intelligent electric vehicle brand, has confirmed plans to produce a new all-electric city car, the #2. This two-seater vehicle will be launched in late 2026.
The #2 is being developed on a new proprietary architecture designed specifically for ultra-compact vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is handling the styling of the vehicle. Production will take place in China, with plans for distribution in China, Europe, and other select global markets.
smart‘s Global CEO, Tong Xiangbei, expressed excitement about the project. He highlighted the challenges of building an ultra-compact electric vehicle, emphasizing the company’s enhanced production and development capabilities, made possible by shareholder support. He viewed the #2 as a perfect opportunity to revitalize the iconic city car.
Mandy Zhang, smart‘s Global CMO, noted the original smart fortwo‘s impact, stating it became a symbol of urban mobility and culture. The #2, she explained, is a response to market demand, combining cutting-edge technology with the brand’s design philosophy.
The #2‘s development follows the successful completion of the company’s internal “project: two” feasibility study. It will join the existing smart #1, #3, and #5 models, further diversifying smart‘s product portfolio. The company intends to offer a range of vehicles, including agile city cars and premium mid-range SUVs, to meet various mobility needs.
The company’s history dates back to the 1990s, always focused on innovative urban mobility solutions. A joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, formed in late 2019, has overseen a significant brand and product renewal. smart aims to continue to expand its global presence, currently operating in around 40 countries and regions. The company plans to further increase its global business operations in 2025.
