Skylo Technologies, a provider of direct-to-device satellite connectivity, and Garmin, a leading manufacturer of GPS devices, have expanded their partnership. The collaboration integrates Skylo‘s satellite network into the new fēnix 8 Pro smartwatch.
This integration enables users to send and receive text messages and trigger emergency SOS messages directly from their wrist, regardless of cellular coverage. The feature is particularly beneficial in remote areas with limited or no terrestrial network access. The service covers parts of the United States, Canada, and Europe.
The fēnix 8 Pro uses Skylo‘s commercially available satellite network. In an emergency, users can contact the Garmin Response emergency coordination center. This center will relay messages to appropriate emergency services, providing crucial location data to assist rescue efforts. Users can also communicate directly with family and friends via text message, or through the Garmin Messenger app on a paired smartphone.
This latest development builds upon an existing relationship between the two companies. Garmin and Skylo have previously worked together to provide emergency coordination services through Garmin Response. This 24/7 service has helped countless individuals in need by connecting them with emergency services, law enforcement, and search and rescue teams globally.
Tarun Gupta, Skylo Technologies‘ Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, highlighted the seamless nature of the satellite connectivity experience. He emphasized the companies’ shared goal of creating lighter, more intelligent, and better-connected devices.
Brad Trenkle, Garmin‘s co-Chief Operating Officer, expressed pride in the partnership and highlighted Garmin Response‘s long history of supporting SOS incidents worldwide, connecting people in need with potentially life-saving assistance.
Skylo‘s use of 3GPP standards-based protocols allows for cost-effective integration of satellite technology into existing devices. Their satellite network currently covers 36 countries and 60 million square kilometers. The service requires no additional antennas or hardware, utilizing existing chipsets in modern devices.
The fēnix 8 Pro smartwatches are expected to ship on September 8th and will be available from select Garmin retailers and online. Skylo aims to extend direct-to-device satellite connectivity to a billion devices globally.
