Shield Space secures £2m to accelerate autonomous satellite defence

Shield Space, a UK defence technology startup focused on protecting satellites from interference and attack, has raised £2 million in new funding to expand its team, move into new facilities in Lincoln and prepare for a first test flight planned for early 2027.

The round was led by the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II via Mercia Ventures, with participation from Twin Path Ventures, ROI Ventures and P3A Ventures. The company said the capital will support product development and operational growth as it works to validate autonomous safeguarding capabilities for future military and commercial satellite fleets.

Why satellite protection is becoming urgent

Orbit is increasingly congested, contested and vulnerable. While satellites underpin everything from military communications to navigation, weather forecasting and financial infrastructure, the risks they face are rising on multiple fronts.

Electronic threats such as jamming and other forms of interference can disrupt services and degrade mission performance. At the same time, concerns are growing around more direct, physical threats to spacecraft, alongside the persistent hazard posed by space debris and close-approach incidents.

According to UK Space Command estimates cited by the company, there are around 220 counterspace systems active that are capable of damaging or destroying satellites. The combination of deliberate hostile action and accidental hazards has increased pressure on operators to respond faster than traditional satellite control models allow.

From ground-driven decisions to onboard autonomy

Most satellite manoeuvres today remain heavily dependent on ground-based teams. When a threat emerges—whether a suspected hostile approach, an interference event or an imminent conjunction with debris—operators typically need to detect the issue, assess it, coordinate a response and then uplink manoeuvre commands. That process can introduce delays at the very moment when seconds matter.

Shield Space is developing autonomous guidance systems designed to reduce that lag by enabling satellites to assess risk and act in real time. The company’s aim is to equip spacecraft with onboard decision-making that can identify hazards and execute evasive manoeuvres without waiting for instructions from Earth.

The approach, if proven, could strengthen resilience for both defence and commercial operators by allowing spacecraft to respond more quickly to changing conditions in orbit—whether from interference, hostile behaviour or debris.

Expansion in Lincoln and a 2027 flight milestone

With the new funding, Shield Space plans to move into new premises in Lincoln and hire five additional specialists. The company is also working toward its first test flight in early 2027, which it frames as a key step in validating autonomous protection concepts for operational use.

The Lincoln expansion aligns with the investment’s regional focus through the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II, which is backed by the British Business Bank. Investors and public-sector stakeholders positioned the deal as part of a broader push to support manufacturing and advanced technology startups outside traditional hubs.

Founded by “soldier–scientists” from UK Space Command

Shield Space was founded in 2025 by Graeme Ritchie and Dan Molland, who met while working at UK Space Command. The company describes itself as a “soldier–scientist” organisation, combining operational defence experience with deep technical expertise.

Graeme Ritchie, the company’s CEO, is a former RAF defence technology specialist and previously founded Shield UAS Solutions, a consultancy focused on drone operations. Dan Molland, the company’s CTO, specialises in launch integration and has worked on payloads flown on missions involving SpaceX and NASA, according to the company.

Shield Space is targeting NATO and allied defence customers with systems that support space control and counterspace objectives, positioning its technology as part of the infrastructure needed to maintain access and freedom of action in orbit.

What executives and investors are saying

Graeme Ritchie said the company’s goal is to reduce the uncertainty and delays that adversaries can exploit. “Much of modern life depends on space – our adversaries understand this and deliberately exploit uncertainty and delay,” he said, adding that the UK and its allies will need sovereign capabilities to operate in contested environments.

Dan Molland said the technology could also reduce operating costs by enabling real-time responses without constant reliance on space networks or large operational teams.

Amrit Sami of Mercia Ventures said protecting space assets is becoming a national priority and that the funding would help accelerate development toward deployment.

Louis Taylor, CEO of the British Business Bank, said backing startups in manufacturing and technology remains a priority, and described Shield Space as a company with the potential to help safeguard strategic space assets while supporting regional growth.

What comes next

The next 12–18 months will likely be defined by hiring, systems engineering and early validation work as Shield Space advances toward its 2027 test flight. If the company can demonstrate reliable onboard autonomy for threat detection and manoeuvre decision-making, it could become an important contributor to the emerging market for satellite resilience—where defence requirements and commercial risk management are increasingly converging.
