Shield AI raises $2B to expand autonomous flight
Shield AI has secured a $2 billion investment from Advent International at a $12.7 billion valuation, positioning the defense technology company to accelerate development and deployment of Hivemind, its autonomous AI pilot system.
The funding is aimed at scaling product capabilities and expanding operational reach for Hivemind, which is designed to enable aircraft to operate with high levels of autonomy in complex environments. The investment underscores growing investor appetite for defense and aerospace technologies that combine autonomy, simulation, and AI-driven decision-making.
Acquisition targets simulation and training
Alongside the financing, Shield AI said it will acquire Aechelon Technology, a simulation firm. The deal is intended to bolster Shield AI’s ability to test, validate, and iterate autonomous behaviors using advanced simulation environments—an increasingly critical component for fielding reliable autonomy at scale.
Simulation can shorten development cycles and reduce the cost and risk of real-world testing, especially for systems that must perform under uncertain and contested conditions. By bringing Aechelon Technology into the organization, Shield AI aims to strengthen its end-to-end pipeline from training and evaluation to deployment.
Why the round matters
The $12.7 billion valuation places Shield AI among the most highly valued private companies focused on defense autonomy. The size of the raise also signals expectations that autonomous software platforms like Hivemind can be scaled across multiple aircraft types and mission profiles.
With fresh capital and a simulation acquisition, Shield AI is positioning itself to move faster on product maturation, integration, and broader adoption of autonomous AI capabilities across defense and aerospace markets.
