BERLIN — German medtech startup Sedivention secured €2.9 million in seed funding on Tuesday to develop its minimally invasive obesity treatment device, the company announced in an official corporate statement. The financing round, closed to support ongoing clinical preparations and complex device engineering, was led jointly by venture capital firms bmp Ventures and IBG Funds.
High-Tech Gründerfonds also contributed significantly to the investment alongside a group of unnamed superangels and a strategic participant originating from a major global medtech firm, according to co-founder Dr. Andreas Bröcker. The company, originally established back in 2021, will direct the newly injected capital toward advanced product development and the systematic collection of initial clinical data across multiple European research centers.
Sedivention develops a specialized cryo balloon catheter that utilizes targeted cryoablation to interrupt specific branches of the vagus nerve in patients suffering from severe chronic overeating and metabolic disorders. The novel treatment positions itself directly against popular blockbuster weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which have already generated combined global sales exceeding $4.5 billion and could theoretically reach $38 billion over the next decade, per health sector estimates.
Established industry competitors including Medtronic and Abbott are also actively researching alternative neuromodulation technologies for weight management, corporate records and regulatory filings show. Dr. Jan Engels, senior investment manager at HTGF, said the Sedivention procedure distinguishes itself within the market by offering a single outpatient intervention without ever requiring ongoing pharmaceutical prescriptions or invasive surgical alterations.
Dr. Ute Nollert and Dr. Andreas Bröcker designed the experimental device to provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional bariatric surgery for patients who frequently face severe side effects from existing chemical options. The Berlin-based startup plans to utilize the €2.9 million to advance upcoming human clinical trials and secure critical regulatory milestones ahead of anticipated international commercial distribution.
