ProRata.ai Secures $40M to Back New Publisher Revenue Model

AI startup ProRata.ai has finalized a $40 million Series B funding round, led by Touring Capital, to support its new AI search tool for publishers.

According to information obtained by ixfy.net, which reports on investment news in the tech and AI sectors, the generative AI startup ProRata.ai has completed a significant $40 million Series B round. Company CEO Bill Gross stated that this financing will be used to launch a new AI-powered search tool aimed at protecting the rights of content creators in the publishing industry.

The Vision Behind the Investment

The investment round, led by Touring Capital, also saw participation from existing investors such as Mayfield Fund, MVP Ventures, Revolution Ventures, SBI Investment, BOLD Capital, XPV-Exponential Ventures, and Idealab Studio. This new funding brings the company’s total capital raised to over $70 million.

Nagraj Kashyap, a general partner at Touring Capital, commented that as generative AI transforms the digital world, creating infrastructure to fairly reward content owners has become a necessity. Bill Gross added that while the company was in a strong financial position, the belief that Touring Capital showed in their vision was a key factor in accepting the investment.

Gist Answers: A New Opportunity for Content Creators

ProRata.ai‘s platform, named Gist Answers, allows publishers to add an AI search engine to their sites that is fed by their own content pools. This system offers publishers a chance to both increase reader engagement and open up a new revenue stream. Publishers who license their content to the platform receive a 50% share of the resulting advertising revenue.

Gross emphasized that the service is completely free for publishers and aims to promote an ethical search experience. Major names like Popular Science and The Atlantic are among those planning to join the system, while Adweek is known to have tested the platform during the Cannes Lions event. Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic and a board member of ProRata.ai, noted that his priority is to deliver journalism to readers through trusted platforms.

Industry Dynamics and Next Steps

This development represents a critical step amid the ongoing struggle by publishers against AI companies using their content without paying royalties. ProRata.ai differentiates itself by offering a solution focused on attribution and revenue sharing. Bill Gross expressed his hope that large models like OpenAI will eventually come to the table to discuss a fair royalty system once they begin to feel the effects of a lack of quality content. The company will use the new investment to expand its team from 75 to 100 people, specifically strengthening its sales and customer service departments. By doing so, it aims to generate more ad revenue and grow the sharing model with its publisher partners.
