Professor Dr. Cengiz Koksal, a cardiovascular surgery specialist at Medipol Health Group, recently issued a warning regarding the serious threat of foot infections in patients with vascular disease. He emphasized the rapid progression of such infections and the importance of recognizing early warning signs.
The expert explained that blocked blood vessels significantly impair the body’s ability to fight infection. This compromised immune response in the lower extremities allows even minor wounds to escalate rapidly into severe problems. A seemingly insignificant cut, blister, or abrasion can quickly become a major medical concern.
Professor Koksal highlighted the subtle symptoms patients should watch for. These include redness, discoloration (such as darkening of the skin), swelling, and pain, even if mild. He stressed that any of these symptoms, particularly in individuals with known vascular issues, should prompt immediate medical consultation. Delaying treatment can lead to significant complications, including tissue death and the need for extensive interventions such as amputation.
He also pointed out that the risk factors for these infections extend beyond simply having vascular problems. Patients with diabetes, those who are smokers, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a particularly high risk. These factors further compromise the body’s ability to heal wounds and resist infection.
The professor advised patients to practice meticulous foot hygiene, including regular washing and thorough drying. He also recommended wearing appropriate footwear that avoids pressure points and protects the feet from injury. Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels (for diabetics) and quitting smoking are also crucial preventative measures. Prompt attention to any foot wound, no matter how small, is vital.
Professor Koksal’s message underscores the critical role of early diagnosis and intervention in managing foot infections associated with vascular disease. He emphasized the need for patients to be vigilant about their foot health and to seek medical attention promptly if they experience any concerning symptoms. This proactive approach can significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce the risk of severe complications. The warning serves as a crucial reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of neglecting early symptoms.
