Plata Secures $250 Million Funding, Eyes Banking Expansion in LATAM

Mexican fintech Plata raises $250 million, boosting valuation to $3.1 billion, as it prepares to launch comprehensive banking services in Latin America.

Plata’s Funding Milestone
Plata, a fintech company based in Mexico, has successfully completed an equity funding round, raising $250 million and increasing its valuation to $3.1 billion. This significant investment comes as the company gears up to transition into a fully licensed bank. Notably, this funding round follows a previous raise of $160 million in early 2025, establishing Plata as one of the most well-funded fintech firms in Latin America this year. Leading the investment are prominent backers such as Kora, Moore Strategic Ventures LLC, and TelevisaUnivision.

Expansion Plans and Regulatory Approval
Having secured regulatory approval for a full banking license in December 2024, Plata is currently finalizing its audits in anticipation of launching a suite of banking services. These services are set to extend beyond traditional credit options to include payroll access, debit accounts, lending for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and cross-border financial products. This expansion is crucial for the company as it aims to better serve Mexico’s underbanked population, a core part of its mission since its inception.

Innovative Offerings and Market Position
Founded in 2023 by Neri Tollardo and Danil Anisimov, Plata was established with the goal of democratizing financial access for many in Mexico. The company utilizes a proprietary, AI-driven, cloud-native core banking infrastructure to provide flexible and transparent credit options. One of its standout products, the Plata Card, features benefits such as up to 5% cashback and a 60-day payment window, which differentiates it from competitors like Nubank, Ualá, and Klar.

Since commencing operations in April 2023, Plata has expanded its workforce from a modest team of 100 to over 3,000 employees, with a significant number of staff possessing STEM backgrounds focused on developing its in-house banking technology. The fintech has also achieved remarkable growth, boasting more than two million active users and issuing approximately 10% of all new credit cards in Mexico. This rapid scaling reflects Plata’s operational maturity and strong market presence.

Future Aspirations in Latin America
With nearly $750 million raised in total through equity and debt since its founding, Plata is not only looking to solidify its position within Mexico but also has plans to expand its operations across Latin America, including into countries such as Colombia. By doing so, Plata aims to emerge as a significant player in the region’s digital banking landscape, enhancing financial service access for millions of underserved customers and intensifying competition within the rapidly evolving fintech sector of LATAM.
