Patrick Hemingway, renowned author and wildlife conservationist, and the last surviving son of literary giant Ernest Hemingway, died peacefully at his Montana home on Tuesday at the age of 97. His grandson, Patrick Hemingway Adams, remembered him as a multifaceted individual, fluent in several languages and possessing a keen intellect, but ultimately devoted to the arts.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1928, Hemingway spent his youth between Cuba and Key West, Florida. He frequently accompanied his father on adventures, even participating in wartime patrols in the Caribbean. He later graduated from Harvard University with a degree in History and Literature.
Hemingway‘s career began with wildlife instruction in Tanzania, where he trained the nation’s first park rangers. He also served as a forestry officer with the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). After his mother’s death, he focused on farming in Tanzania, later becoming known for his safari expeditions in British East Africa.
Beginning in the 1970s, Hemingway dedicated himself to managing his father’s literary estate. His contributions included editing and completing Ernest Hemingway‘s book, True at First Light, and providing historical context for several Hemingway classics. In 2022, he co-authored Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and Ernest Hemingway, a collection of correspondence between father and son.
Angela Hemingway Charles, President of the Board of Directors for Hemingway Ltd., praised Patrick Hemingway‘s commitment to his father’s values and his lasting impact on the literary and conservation worlds. She noted his significant contributions and the profound influence he had on many lives.
In 2023, Patrick and his wife, Carol, established a scholar-in-residence program at the John F. Kennedy Library. He also participated in a Library Forum discussion in 2006 about his life and work.
Hemingway is survived by his daughter, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A public memorial service is planned for a later date. For media inquiries, contact Bettina L. Klinger, the family spokesperson and CEO of Collective 222.
