OpenAI debuts ChatGPT for Excel beta with GPT-5.4

OpenAI expands ChatGPT into Excel for finance workflows

OpenAI has introduced a beta version of ChatGPT for Excel, bringing its assistant directly into spreadsheet-based workflows for finance teams. The new offering is powered by GPT-5.4, which the company says achieves 87% on an investment-banking benchmark, positioning the tool for tasks such as financial modeling, scenario analysis, and rapid spreadsheet iteration.

Natural-language modeling inside spreadsheets

With ChatGPT for Excel, users can generate formulas, build and modify models, and run analyses using natural-language prompts rather than manual spreadsheet construction. The approach is designed to reduce time spent on repetitive spreadsheet work and help teams move from raw data to decision-ready outputs faster, particularly in forecasting and sensitivity testing.

New financial data integrations

Alongside the Excel beta, OpenAI announced new ChatGPT financial integrations with Moody’s, Factiva, and MSCI. The integrations are intended to support research and due diligence by connecting conversational prompts to structured and unstructured financial information sources—enabling users to summarize materials, compare entities, and pull relevant context without switching between multiple platforms.

What it means for finance teams

The combined push into spreadsheets and data providers signals a broader effort by OpenAI to make ChatGPT a front-end interface for core finance tasks. For banks, corporate finance groups, and investment teams, the promise is a more streamlined workflow: drafting models, checking assumptions, and compiling research in one place, guided by prompts and iterative refinement.
