LONDON — Anu Adebajo, the chief executive officer of the Newton Venture Program, said on Tuesday that emerging venture capital managers face severe financial hurdles when attempting to launch their first funds in 2024. The executive identified two primary obstacles, specifically noting that market bifurcation and limited access to capital have created a difficult climate for new firms trying to establish operations in the British capital.

The Newton Venture Program executive explained that the market split between established players and new entrants has become significantly more pronounced over the last 12 months. That structural divide forces junior firms to directly compete against established legacy funds that currently control a larger share of the available capital in London, according to the official statement provided by the organization.

Adebajo said that the prevalence of weak exit events is a primary driver behind the current funding drought for junior investors during the 2024 fiscal cycle. The chief executive said that when a startup fails to achieve a trade sale or an initial public offering, the return on investment for Limited Partners drops to zero, which directly discourages those partners from committing capital to new venture funds.

Data compiled by the Newton Venture Program showed that the scarcity of partner capital remains the single most significant barrier for new managers seeking to raise their initial $50 million or $100 million funds. The organization did not provide a specific numerical figure for the total overall decline in partner commitments, but Adebajo stated that the current economic climate has made the process of securing financial backing harder than it was in previous years.

The Newton Venture Program will continue to monitor these ongoing economic conditions through the end of 2024 to determine if market conditions for new venture capital firms improve before the calendar turns. Adebajo said that understanding these specific financial constraints remains the most critical task for the next generation of investors who are attempting to raise capital in the current market.
