California Governor Gavin Newsom, along with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, announced a new alliance focused on safeguarding public health policies. The governors expressed serious concerns about the direction of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the current administration.
Their action comes amid rising COVID-19 cases and significant changes at the CDC. The governors believe recent restructuring and staffing reductions, coupled with shifts in vaccine policy, undermine decades of scientific consensus and jeopardize public health.
Washington State Health Secretary Dennis Worsham emphasized the importance of preventative public health measures, including vaccination, in preventing illness and saving lives. Oregon Health Director Sejal Hathi highlighted the crucial role of vaccines in public health and the negative impact of politicizing scientific guidance.
The new alliance aims to coordinate health guidelines and immunization plans, relying on recommendations from reputable national medical organizations. The governors intend to create consistent messaging and policies to counteract what they see as misleading or politicized information coming from the federal level.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services countered the governors’ statement, criticizing the pandemic-era policies of Democrat-led states as eroding public trust in public health agencies. The spokesperson maintained that the administration’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices remains the authoritative source for immunization recommendations.
Meanwhile, several other states are taking proactive steps to ensure vaccine access. Illinois is consulting medical experts to develop fall vaccination guidance, while New Mexico is working to remove barriers to vaccine access at pharmacies. A group of Northeast states recently met to coordinate vaccine recommendations, highlighting a broader trend of states taking independent action on public health matters.
