New Incentives for Competitive Wrestling
The upcoming National Duals Invitational, a premier collegiate wrestling event sponsored by Paycom, has announced the introduction of $50,000 in team takedown bonuses, further enriching its already impressive prize pool of over $1 million. Scheduled to take place on November 15-16 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this innovative element aims to promote a more aggressive style of wrestling, rewarding teams that can secure takedowns quickly. The tournament is set to be a significant occasion for wrestling enthusiasts, featuring 16 of the top NCAA Division I teams.
As part of the competition, teams will vie for five separate $10,000 bonuses awarded during the first day’s sessions. These bonuses will be given to the team that achieves the fastest average takedown time during each of the initial rounds, with the calculated average based on the five fastest takedowns from five different wrestlers on each team. The takedown times will be recorded starting from the beginning of the first period, emphasizing the importance of a strong start in the matches.
Enhanced Competition and Increased Opportunities
According to Matt Surber, the tournament director, the implementation of takedown bonuses will heighten the excitement for both participants and spectators alike. He noted that this initiative not only encourages teams to adopt an attacking mindset but also magnifies the impact of each second from the initial whistle. With the combination of Saturday’s takedown bonuses and Sunday’s bracket payouts, teams are presented with unprecedented opportunities to earn financial rewards for their programs.
The total prize structure of the National Duals Invitational is substantial, with the winning team set to receive $200,000. The second and third-place teams will be awarded $150,000 each, while the fourth-placed team will take home $75,000. The payouts continue down to $20,000 for the eighth-place team, ensuring that all participating teams benefit financially, with each guaranteed $20,000 just for attending.
Broadcasting and Event Details
Throughout the event, takedown bonuses will be awarded during the morning matchups at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., as well as during the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. and the consolation rounds at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. A team can potentially win the bonus multiple times across different rounds, adding to the competitive spirit of the tournament. FloWrestling is set to provide live coverage of 27 duals, with the championship final being broadcast live on ESPNU at 6 p.m. CST, showcasing the finalists as they compete for the grand prize.
