Lithea’s Funding Success
In a significant boost to its ongoing cancer treatment innovations, Sweden-based company Lithea has successfully raised €851,000 from its existing investors. This funding is earmarked for the advancement of its unique drug delivery system, which is designed to directly target tumors, particularly in childhood bone cancer cases. The investment is crucial as the company prepares to move its lead product, LIT1001, into clinical trials. This funding comes shortly after Lithea received a €27,000 planning grant from Vinnova under the Planning Grant for International Proposal 2025 program, aimed at supporting its proposal for the EIC Accelerator Open.
Promising Results from Animal Studies
According to Ludvig Sjöberg, the CEO of Lithea AB, the company’s innovative technology has demonstrated encouraging results in preclinical studies. Reports indicate a dramatic 92% reduction in tumor size in animal models, achieved with significantly lower systemic drug levels compared to traditional treatment methods. Sjöberg noted that the latest funding will enhance their scientific validation and facilitate progress towards human trials, emphasizing their commitment to providing effective solutions for cancer patients.
Investment Trends in Oncology
The funding round for Lithea aligns with a broader trend across Europe in 2025, where investments in oncology and biotechnology are on the rise. Notably, Exeliom Biosciences in France recently extended its Series A funding by €2.85 million to enhance cancer immunotherapy efforts. Similarly, Swiss companies such as NUCLIDIUM AG raised €84 million for their radiopharmaceutical platform, while Hedera Dx secured €15 million to advance precision molecular diagnostics. While Lithea‘s funding is relatively modest compared to these later-stage rounds, it reflects the confidence investors have in targeted drug delivery technologies.
Innovative Approach to Treatment
Founded in 2021, Lithea specializes in developing advanced therapies for solid tumors, with a mission to extend the lives of cancer patients. Its lead product, LIT1001, is a small pellet containing the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin, intended for direct placement into bone tumors, specifically targeting osteosarcoma. This innovative approach aims to enhance treatment efficacy while minimizing adverse side effects that are commonly associated with systemic chemotherapy. The product has also received special designation from the U.S. FDA as an Orphan Drug, expediting its development and approval process. Moreover, Lithea‘s platform has the potential for broader application with various cancer drugs, which could extend to more prevalent cancers such as breast, lung, and prostate cancers, offering hope for improved treatment outcomes in the future.
