Reinventing Shrimp Farming
The shrimp farming industry is under increasing scrutiny due to its historical impact on delicate coastal ecosystems, leading to calls for a significant transformation in production practices. Traditional shrimp farming methods have contributed to the destruction of mangroves, pollution of water bodies, and reliance on antibiotics, raising concerns about their sustainability in light of modern environmental goals. In response to these challenges, the French startup Lisaqua is pioneering innovative approaches to shrimp cultivation that align with ecological principles. Recently, the company has successfully secured €9 million in funding to propel its mission forward.
Funding from Notable Investors
The financing round was led by the Fonds Révolution Environnementale et Solidaire, which is supported by Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale and managed by Crédit Mutuel Impact. Other significant contributors include the Belgian investment fund Noshaq and longstanding collaborators such as the Le Gouessant cooperative. This influx of capital will be pivotal for Lisaqua as it seeks to establish new benchmarks in responsible aquaculture.
Innovation at the Core
Founded in 2018 by marine biologist Charlotte Schoelinck and engineer-entrepreneur Gabriel Boneu, Lisaqua is driven by a clear mission: to produce seafood that does not compromise the health of our planet. The duo’s combined expertise in marine ecology, biotechnology, and sustainable engineering has allowed them to cultivate a vision focused on restoring the balance within the seafood supply chain. The initial stages of their venture involved conducting small-scale experiments in controlled environments, which eventually led to the establishment of a pilot farm located in Saint-Herblain. Here, they successfully demonstrated the viability of land-based shrimp farming with minimal environmental impact.
Patented Farming Techniques
Central to Lisaqua’s approach is its patented farming system, which integrates biofiltration with advanced predictive models to maintain a fully controlled environment. This innovative methodology not only protects vital mangrove ecosystems but also significantly reduces water usage through a continuous recycling process. Additionally, the farm harnesses waste heat from local incineration facilities to maintain optimal tank temperatures, exemplifying a circular economy model. The resulting product is a premium shrimp free from antibiotics and sulfites, which has garnered acclaim from culinary professionals for its superior flavor and texture.
Future Expansion Plans
The recent funding will facilitate the construction of Lisaqua’s inaugural large-scale facility in Monthyon, Seine-et-Marne, which is expected to produce 100 metric tons of shrimp annually. This project is part of France’s “Première Usine” initiative, aligned with the broader France 2030 plan aimed at sustainable industrial development. As the company expands, they are looking to replicate their successful model across France and Europe, with plans for a new site in Belgium in collaboration with Noshaq. With a growing team of 38 specialists, Lisaqua is positioned to lead the charge in transforming shrimp farming into a sustainable industry.
