Keen Venture Partners has officially announced the first closing of its new European defence and security technology fund, successfully raising more than €150 million. This significant amount positions it as the largest venture capital fund dedicated to defence technology in Europe. With the backing of the European Investment Fund and the Dutch pension fund PME, Keen Venture Partners aims to identify and invest in technologies that are often overlooked or developed at a slower pace by traditional defence entities. This strategy places the firm in a unique position within the expanding defence technology ecosystem across Europe.
Investment Strategy and Focus
The firm plans to allocate between €1 million and €10 million in funding to more than 25 different companies, specifically targeting those located within NATO member states in Europe. Established in 2016 by founders Giuseppe Lacerenza, Alexander Ribbink, and Ties Klinkhamer, Keen Venture Partners was born out of a shared conviction that Europe needs to enhance its own defence and deep-tech capabilities. This enhancement is vital for ensuring strategic autonomy in a world that is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
The founders recognized that traditional defence procurement mechanisms often lag behind the pace of emerging threats. They saw an opportunity to speed up innovation by supporting startups that focus on creating scalable and commercially viable defence technologies. Their vision is reinforced by a broad pan-European network that includes policymakers, military leaders, and industry stakeholders, which has already facilitated the growth of companies such as Intelic AI and Perciv AI.
Hands-On Approach to Ventures
What distinguishes Keen Venture Partners is its thesis-driven and hands-on investment strategy. The firm emphasizes early-stage companies that integrate deep technology defence capabilities with commercial viability. Their involvement extends beyond merely providing capital; they also offer strategic guidance to help startups navigate the intricate landscape of the defence sector.
As they look to the future, Keen Venture Partners aims to invest in over 25 companies, seeking to stimulate a new wave of innovation within the defence industry that encompasses a wide array of fields, from cybersecurity to space technologies. This ambitious initiative reflects the firm’s commitment to fostering an agile and responsive defence ecosystem that can adapt to the challenges of modern security threats.
