The Helen Woodward Animal Center's 20th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon in Rancho Santa Fe, California, raised funds for orphaned pets. Over 50 dogs competed in surfing events, including individual, duo, and tandem human-canine competitions. The event featured various family-friendly activities.

The annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon, hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, concluded its 20th year on September 7th at Del Mar Dog Beach in California. The event, a popular fundraiser for orphaned pets, drew a large crowd and featured over 50 canine competitors.

The competition showcased surfing dogs of varying skill levels, competing in ten-minute heats judged on wave-riding technique, enthusiasm, and overall confidence. Winners were selected across weight classes, with top dogs advancing to the Best-in-Surf finals. A separate freestyle competition allowed for more creative displays of canine surfing prowess.

Beyond individual competitions, participants enjoyed the unique Duo & Trios and Peeps & Pups Tandem events. These categories involved multiple dogs sharing a single surfboard or dogs surfing alongside their human companions.

The day wasn’t solely focused on surfing; attendees enjoyed various family-friendly activities. These included live music, a canine costume contest, a children’s activity area, vendor booths, and a dog agility course. A special ceremony honored legendary surf dogs Cherie and Derby California.

Organizers emphasized that the Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon‘s primary aim is raising funds for the Helen Woodward Animal Center. All proceeds directly support the center’s life-saving work for orphaned animals and its adoption programs. The event’s unique format, combining canine athleticism with charitable fundraising, has made it a beloved annual tradition.
