Graham Greene, a highly respected Indigenous actor, died on Monday in Stratford, Ontario, at the age of 73. He had been battling an undisclosed illness for some time. News outlets initially reported his passing late Monday evening.

Born in 1952 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Greene worked in various trades—including draftsman, steelworker, welder, and carpenter—before pursuing acting in the 1970s. His early roles included appearances in the Canadian television series “The Great Detective” and the film “Running Brave.”

His breakthrough role came in 1990 as Kicking Bird in the acclaimed film “Dances with Wolves.” This performance garnered him an Academy Award nomination, one of twelve nominations the film received. “Dances with Wolves” won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Greene continued to build a substantial career, appearing in notable films such as “Maverick,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” and “Wind River.” His television work was equally impressive, with roles in critically-acclaimed series including “Reservation Dogs,” “1883,” “The Last of Us,” and “Tulsa King.” He also appeared in Tom Hanks’ 1999 film, “The Green Mile.”

In 2000, he received a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for “Listen to the Storyteller.” His extensive resume also includes a role as Chief Rains Fall in the popular 2018 video game “Red Dead Redemption 2,” as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his work in the 2002 film “Skins.”
