Fractile’s Ambitious Vision in AI Hardware
Fractile, a London-based AI chipmaker, has successfully secured $220 million in a funding round led by Accel, Factorial Funds, and Founders Fund. Founded in 2022 by Oxford researcher Walter Goodwin, the startup is on a mission to build specialized chips that significantly accelerate AI inference.
Targeting the Inference Bottleneck
The startup, which is also co-founded by Yuhang Song, was established on the premise that advancements in AI will be limited not by model capabilities, but by the time taken to generate practical outputs. Goodwin, who previously conducted research on robotics and computing systems at the University of Oxford, aims to redefine AI hardware from the ground up.
Fractile focuses on the inference stage of AI, where trained models generate responses and perform reasoning tasks. The company highlights that current hardware struggles with increasingly complex workloads due to inefficient memory bandwidth. As some advanced models can produce outputs with tens of millions of tokens, traditional chips may take weeks to process such tasks.
Innovations in AI Hardware
To address these challenges, Fractile is developing specialized hardware architectures designed to enhance inference speed and reduce operational costs. The company claims its systems could boost performance from around 40 tokens per second on existing hardware to an impressive 1,200 tokens per second. Ultimately, Fractile aims to condense workloads that currently take a month into just a single day.
Entering a competitive landscape dominated by NVIDIA and facing challenges from rivals such as AMD and Cerebras, Fractile is carving out its niche by emphasizing ultra-fast inference for large-scale reasoning and long-context computing.
Future Expansion Plans
Fractile’s aspirations extend beyond coding assistants; the company envisions applications in drug discovery, software engineering, and materials science. As it gears up for global expansion, Fractile is actively hiring across locations including London, Bristol, San Francisco, and Taipei, preparing for the commercial deployment of its innovative chips and systems.
The recent capital injection will not only facilitate the launch of Fractile’s groundbreaking technology but also support its broader operational goals in the coming years.
