Small Businesses Confront Growing Compliance Challenges
In Europe, small and mid-sized businesses are increasingly grappling with a complex web of compliance requirements, particularly in light of regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), and the Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS2). For many organizations lacking dedicated compliance personnel or legal advisors, managing these regulations has transitioned from a one-time checklist task to an ongoing, resource-intensive effort that can hinder growth and innovation.
Formalize Aims to Revolutionize Compliance Management
Amidst these challenges, Formalize, a regulatory technology firm founded in Copenhagen in 2021 by entrepreneurs Jakob Lilholm and Christian Jessen, is striving to reshape the compliance landscape. Drawing from their extensive backgrounds in developing compliance-centric organizations, Lilholm and Jessen sought to create a more efficient, intuitive approach to compliance for European SMBs. They articulated their vision by stating that at Formalize, they are dedicated to creating a future where automation and artificial intelligence streamline governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC) without sacrificing security or local expertise.
Recent Funding to Fuel Expansion into Key Markets
Recently, Formalize announced a successful Series B funding round, securing €30 million co-led by Acton Capital and BlackFin Tech, with contributions from West Hill Capital and CIBC Innovation Banking. This substantial investment will facilitate the company’s expansion into critical European markets, particularly the DACH region and France, allowing them to establish new offices and local teams to enhance their proximity to clients and partners.
Innovative Compliance Solutions Tailored for Europe
The platform developed by Formalize automates compliance workflows across various frameworks including GDPR, DORA, and ISO 27001. It effectively centralizes essential processes such as documentation, evidence gathering, and policy tracking while remaining adaptable to sector-specific and regional requirements. This strategic focus positions Formalize as a distinct alternative to larger global competitors like Drata, Vanta, and OneTrust, which often prioritize compliance standards set in the U.S. over the unique regulatory needs inherent to Europe.
Future Innovations and Integration Plans
Looking ahead, Formalize has plans to enhance the artificial intelligence capabilities integrated within its compliance engine, aiming to evolve beyond mere automation towards features such as predictive monitoring and real-time updates to policies. Moreover, the company intends to strengthen its integrations with widely-used enterprise software platforms like Microsoft 365 and HubSpot, ensuring that compliance activities can seamlessly fit into the daily operations of businesses.
Michele Foradori, Managing Director at BlackFin Tech, remarked on Formalize’s potential, noting that the startup has successfully built a product and team capable of addressing SME compliance challenges in Europe, simplifying regulations like GDPR, NIS2, and DORA into manageable workflows. With impressive growth and advances in AI technology, Formalize is well-positioned to transform regulatory challenges into a competitive advantage for its clients.
