LONDON — Ethos secured $22.75 million in Series A funding on Tuesday to expand its digital recruitment platform across international markets. Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz led the investment round with additional financial participation from General Catalyst. James Lo and Daniel J. Mankowitz founded the company in 2023 to replace traditional resume-based hiring with a system evaluating candidate work samples.

The company operates under a business model that requires candidates to submit technical outputs like computer code or research papers for direct assessment. Ethos processed data for more than 5,000 new professionals who joined the platform during a single week in the most recent reporting period. This user intake represents a measurable increase in the active user base for Ethos since the startup began operations last year.

Chief Executive Officer James Lo said in a statement that a traditional curriculum vitae is a poor proxy for what someone is truly capable of doing. The platform currently supports specialized experts working in consulting, market research, and artificial intelligence data labeling fields. Top earners on the Ethos site make over 7,000 pounds per month, according to financial data provided by the company in its latest funding announcement.

General Catalyst president Jeannette zu Fürstenberg said the specialized expertise inside people’s heads has been invisible to the broader economy for too long. The company intends to use the $22.75 million raised in the round to build deeper partnerships with artificial intelligence labs and corporate clients. These funds will also support the development of new software tools designed by Ethos to verify candidate skills against the rising volume of artificial intelligence-generated resumes.

Ethos now competes directly with established industry players such as GLG and Toptal in the competitive professional placement sector. The company did not disclose the specific valuation reached following this Series A round or the exact date for the next phase of its international expansion plans. Management at Ethos confirmed that the capital will be deployed throughout the remainder of 2024 to increase the total number of approved experts listed on the site.
