Dow (NYSE: DOW) recently launched DOWSIL™ EG-4175 Silicone Gel, a protective coating for advanced insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). This new gel is specifically engineered to withstand the high temperatures generated by these components, which are increasingly used in high-voltage systems.
The gel’s high-temperature resistance, up to 180°C, is a key feature. This allows for the creation of more efficient and reliable IGBT modules. The improved thermal management reduces power losses and increases overall system efficiency.
According to Cathy Chu, Dow‘s global strategic marketing director for Consumer & Electronics, the company is expanding its IGBT materials portfolio to meet growing demand for higher power densities. This new silicone gel helps manufacturers design more efficient, higher-density IGBT modules.
The increasing use of higher-voltage batteries in electric vehicles (from 400V to 800V) and the rising power densities in inverters for photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbines necessitate improved thermal management solutions. DOWSIL™ EG-4175 directly addresses this need.
Beyond high-temperature resistance, the gel also offers vibration absorption and self-healing properties. These features further enhance the reliability and longevity of the protected IGBT modules. The gel’s self-priming adhesion simplifies application, and its room-temperature curing reduces energy consumption during manufacturing. For faster production cycles, heat-accelerated curing is also an option.
DOWSIL™ EG-4175 complements Dow’s existing DOWSIL™ EA-7158 Adhesive, creating a comprehensive solution for IGBT module protection. DOWSIL™ EA-7158 is a high-strength, one-part silicone adhesive that bonds well to various substrates.
Both DOWSIL™ EG-4175 Silicone Gel and DOWSIL™ EA-7158 Adhesive are available globally. This new offering strengthens Dow‘s position in the power electronics market, supporting the growth of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies. The company’s broader portfolio of silicone-based dielectric gel products provides comprehensive thermal, electrical, and mechanical protection for various electronic components.
Dow is a major materials science company serving various industries. The company has manufacturing facilities in over 30 countries and a global workforce of approximately 36,000 employees. In 2024, Dow reported sales of approximately $43 billion.
