Dalton Maag‘s MetricsMatch: A New Font Solution

Dalton Maag launched MetricsMatch, a cost-effective font solution for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Addressing OEM frustrations with existing licensing models, it offers open pricing, flexible licensing, and customization options. The initial release includes five font sets, with more planned.

Dalton Maag, a London-based independent typeface design studio, introduced MetricsMatch, a new font solution designed to address the needs of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The company aims to provide a more affordable and flexible alternative to the currently available industry-standard font sets.

OEMs have long voiced concerns about the high costs, limited flexibility, and vendor lock-in associated with existing font licensing models. MetricsMatch directly tackles these issues.

A key feature of MetricsMatch is its focus on metrics compatibility. This ensures seamless font substitution, simplifying integration and reducing time-to-market for both established and new OEMs. The new font solution offers transparent pricing, eliminating hidden fees and providing predictable costs.

David Marshall, Managing Director of Dalton Maag, explained that the company recognized the challenges OEMs face with current licensing structures. He highlighted the lack of transparency and restrictive terms as significant obstacles. MetricsMatch, he emphasized, is intended to provide a more favorable approach.

Lukas Paltram, Executive Creative Director at Dalton Maag, added that the studio maintains its commitment to quality and independence with this new offering. The same rigorous standards applied to client projects were used in developing MetricsMatch.

The initial release of MetricsMatch includes five font sets catering to various applications, such as consumer computing, PDF rendering, and closed captioning and subtitling for DVB, MPEG-4, and ATSC standards. Further development is underway, with additional font sets for printer imaging scheduled for release in 2026.

MetricsMatch offers several key advantages. These include open pricing, fair licensing terms that support innovation without requiring renegotiation, and the ability to easily replace existing fonts without disrupting layout. The fonts also meet relevant industry and ISO standards and provide customization options, including naming rights to align with product branding.

The combination of meticulous design and a robust toolchain ensures high-performance font sets. Dalton Maag aims to empower manufacturers with the quality, flexibility, and fairness they need to overcome supplier lock-in while maintaining a positive user experience.
