CPB‘s Harrison Receives Emmy Despite Funding Cuts

Patricia de Stacy Harrison, long-time president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), will receive a prestigious Emmy Award as the organization prepares to close after nearly 60 years of service, following the loss of federal funding. The award recognizes CPB's significant contributions to American television.

The Television Academy will present its Governors Award to Patricia de Stacy Harrison, the longest-serving president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony on September 7. This honor recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on television.

CPB, which has supported PBS, NPR, and thousands of local radio and television stations, along with beloved programs like “Sesame Street” and “Finding Your Roots,” will soon cease operations. The organization informed employees that most positions will end September 30, with a small transition team remaining until January to complete outstanding tasks.

Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego praised CPB‘s long history of providing informative, educational, and unifying content. He highlighted the organization’s role in ensuring public media’s continued relevance and its commitment to diverse voices and community service.

The CPB‘s closure is expected to significantly affect the journalistic and cultural landscape, particularly impacting smaller public radio and television stations across the United States. Established in 1968 following congressional authorization, the private, non-profit corporation has spent six decades supporting educational programming, cultural content, and emergency alerts.

The end of CPB comes after President Donald Trump signed legislation canceling approximately $1.1 billion in previously approved funding for public broadcasting. The White House cited political bias and unnecessary expense as reasons for the funding withdrawal.

Harrison‘s Emmy Award comes at a bittersweet moment, recognizing CPB‘s legacy while acknowledging the organization’s impending closure. The award joins a list of previous recipients including notable figures from the television industry.
