The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the Scan Design Foundation (SDF) have partnered to offer a new internship program focused on environmental sustainability in Denmark. Eight undergraduate and graduate students will be selected for the eight-week summer program in Copenhagen.
The program is fully funded, covering program costs, airfare, and a living stipend for each participant. Students will gain practical experience working with Danish companies committed to environmentally sustainable practices. The internship aims to enhance students’ understanding of sustainability within a Danish context.
Participants will also engage in a six-credit internship seminar, exploring Danish sustainability culture and networking with professionals in the field. Host companies represent a range of sectors, including cleaning supplies, sustainable infrastructure development, and innovative energy technologies.
Applicants must be eligible for the Pell Grant program. Selection will be based on academic achievement and demonstrated interest in environmental and sustainability studies. The application deadline is November 21, 2025, with the 2026 cohort announced in mid-December. Those who apply but aren’t selected will receive a $1,500 CIEE grant for future study abroad programs.
James P. Pellow, President and CEO of CIEE, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to foster Danish-American relations and provide students with valuable experience in sustainability. Fidelma McGinn, President of the Scan Design Foundation, emphasized the program’s role in showcasing Denmark’s progress in the green transition and building upon the organization’s two-decade history of supporting US-Denmark exchanges.
The Scan Design Foundation, established in 2002 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, aims to strengthen Danish-American ties through cultural exchanges. CIEE, founded in 1947, has facilitated over one million student exchanges across more than 140 countries. More information about the internship can be found on the CIEE website.
