Ballmer, Leonard Face NBA Probe Over Alleged Salary Cap Circumvention

Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and star player Kawhi Leonard are under investigation by the NBA for potential salary cap violations. Allegations suggest Leonard received a substantial payment for a "no-show" job from a company linked to Ballmer, potentially circumventing league rules. The NBA is reviewing the matter.

The NBA has launched an investigation into Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and star player Kawhi Leonard following allegations of salary cap circumvention. A report suggests Leonard received $28 million for a position with a Ballmer-linked company, Aspiration, a now-bankrupt fintech firm.

The report claims the payment was structured to avoid the NBA‘s salary cap restrictions. The contract allegedly allowed Leonard to decline any work assigned by Aspiration, yet still receive payment contingent on his continued presence with the Clippers. The report suggests no evidence exists of Leonard performing any duties for Aspiration.

The NBA‘s salary cap, approximately $150 million, is designed to maintain competitive balance among teams. Circumventing this cap is a serious offense under the league’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

The Clippers issued a statement denying any wrongdoing, asserting that neither Ballmer nor the team violated the salary cap or engaged in any misconduct related to Aspiration. The NBA‘s official response confirmed the commencement of an investigation.

The NBA‘s CBA strictly prohibits side deals that circumvent salary cap rules. This includes agreements between players and team officials involving contract renegotiation, compensation outside of player contracts, and team owner investments in players’ outside ventures. Penalties for such violations are severe, and could include substantial fines for both the team and the player, forfeiture of draft picks, contract voiding, and even suspensions.

Leonard‘s representatives and the NBA Players’ Association have yet to comment publicly. This is not the first time the Clippers under Ballmer have faced accusations of salary cap violations. A previous incident resulted in a fine for the team. Similar investigations have occurred in the league previously, with varying outcomes.

In a notable past case, the Minnesota Timberwolves faced severe penalties, including substantial fines and draft pick forfeiture, for a salary cap circumvention scheme. The severity of potential penalties highlights the seriousness of the current allegations against Ballmer and Leonard. The outcome of the NBA‘s investigation remains to be seen.
