Asteria Unveils New Animated Short “All Heart” by Renowned Filmmakers

Asteria announces "All Heart," an animated short by Oscar winners Michael Govier and Will McCormack, exploring themes of grief and love through innovative animation.

Asteria, a cutting-edge film and animation studio, has officially introduced its latest project, “All Heart,” a poignant animated short created by Academy Award® winners Michael Govier and Will McCormack. This dynamic duo is celebrated for their previous work on the acclaimed Netflix short “If Anything Happens I Love You,” which secured the Oscar for Best Animated Short in 2021. The new film, which spans nine minutes, delves into the emotional journey of a father as he seeks to connect with a young man who shares a special bond with his deceased daughter.

### Innovative Animation Techniques

The short film stands out not only for its narrative but also for its artistic approach, blending traditional hand-drawn animation with groundbreaking AI technology. The artwork is crafted by illustrator Jimmy Thompson, whose original designs serve as the foundation for the film’s visual style. Asteria’s team utilized a custom AI model trained to replicate Thompson’s artistry, which enabled the creation of additional production elements that align with his unique aesthetic. This hybrid technique allows for a seamless integration of AI-assisted animation with classic methods, enhancing the storytelling experience while maintaining artistic integrity.

Furthermore, the production involved a collaborative effort with Los Angeles-based creatives across various stages of the process, including editorial work, compositing, scoring, and sound mixing. This cooperative model reflects Asteria’s commitment to fostering local talent while pushing the boundaries of animated storytelling.

### Oscar Campaign and Future Projects

“All Heart” has already qualified for consideration for the Academy Awards, marking the beginning of its official Oscar campaign this season. Govier and McCormack, in a joint statement, expressed their desire to continue exploring intimate human experiences through animation. They noted that incorporating AI into their filmmaking process has afforded them greater creative freedom, enabling them to realize their artistic visions more efficiently.

The project is produced alongside notable figures in the industry, including Kimberly Dennison from Apple TV+‘s “Stillwater,” and Justin Lacob, known for the Academy Award-nominated “Ninety-Five Senses.” Executive producers include Natasha Lyonne, Bryn Mooser, Matthew Cherchio, Benjamin Michel, and Nick Confalone.

In tandem with “All Heart,” Asteria has also announced “ChikaBOOM!” by visionary filmmaker c. Crag Patterson, which features an impressive voice cast, including Yara Shahidi and Daveed Diggs. This continued focus on innovative and artistically driven narratives underscores Asteria’s mission to redefine storytelling in the age of technology.

As the animation landscape evolves, Asteria’s pioneering efforts with “All Heart” exemplify the studio’s dedication to merging traditional artistry with modern advancements, promising audiences a deeply resonant viewing experience.
