Amazon announced the termination of its Prime Invitee program, a feature enabling Prime members to extend free shipping benefits to individuals residing outside their primary address. This change, effective October 1st, aims to streamline the Prime membership structure.
The company stated the decision was made to encourage broader adoption of individual Prime memberships. Those previously benefiting from the shared shipping privileges will now need to subscribe separately.
The Prime Invitee program will be replaced by Amazon Family. This new program allows Prime members to share the free two-day shipping benefit, along with other perks, with a limited number of household members.
Amazon Family permits sharing with one additional adult, up to four teenagers (added before April 7th), and up to four children’s profiles. Amazon clarified that the additional adult could be a spouse, family member, or roommate. This contrasts with the previous program’s broader scope.
The cost of a Prime membership remains $14.99 monthly or $139 annually. This price point is unaffected by the program changes.
This shift coincides with Amazon’s ongoing investments in expanding its delivery network. The company is working to improve delivery speeds in less populated areas across the U.S. The initiative aims to extend faster delivery to a significant portion of smaller communities. Amazon had previously stated goals to reach 1,000 of the over 4,000 targeted locations by the end of the year.
