AM Best raised its outlook on the financial strength and credit ratings of Sompo Seguros Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (Sompo Mexico). The ratings agency cited the anticipated positive impact of a major acquisition by the parent company.
Sompo Mexico, a subsidiary of Sompo America Insurance Company (SAIC), is part of the larger Sompo International Holdings Ltd. (SIH) group. The ultimate parent company is SOMPO Holdings, Inc., a leading non-life insurance group in Japan. AM Best noted the strong integration of Sompo Mexico within this broader structure.
The positive outlook reflects SOMPO Holdings’ recent acquisition of Aspen Insurance Holdings Limited (Aspen). This acquisition, expected to close in the first half of 2026, is a significant all-cash transaction valued at approximately USD 3.5 billion.
AM Best analysts believe the Aspen acquisition will substantially benefit Sompo‘s global profile. The acquisition will enhance the group’s geographical diversification and expand its presence in the global property and casualty (re)insurance market. Aspen brings a diversified portfolio and significant expertise in specialty lines to the Sompo group.
The ratings agency’s current review considers the potential for improved business profile and enhanced financial strength for the entire Sompo group resulting from the Aspen acquisition. The positive outlook is contingent upon the successful completion of the acquisition and AM Best‘s subsequent assessment of its impact on SJ‘s (Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.) underlying financial fundamentals.
AM Best‘s assessment of Sompo Mexico‘s financial strength considers various factors. These include the strong balance sheet of SJ, its robust operating performance, favorable business profile, and effective enterprise risk management. The agency also highlighted Sompo Mexico‘s strong risk-adjusted capitalization.
The ratings remain under review until the acquisition is finalized and AM Best completes its comprehensive evaluation. Further information on the ratings and related disclosures can be found on the AM Best website. The agency also provides guidance on the use and limitations of credit ratings.
