AM Best recently downgraded the financial strength rating of Erie Insurance Group‘s property and casualty members. The ratings agency lowered the assessment to A (Excellent) from A+ (Superior). This action reflects a decline in Erie‘s overall balance sheet strength.
The downgrade stems from several factors. Significant underwriting losses, largely attributed to increased weather-related events and higher severity in auto and homeowner claims, have impacted Erie‘s surplus. This has led to a decrease in risk-adjusted capitalization and a rise in underwriting leverage.
Erie‘s liquidity metrics have also declined. However, the company has implemented several measures to address these issues. These include rate adjustments, a restructured catastrophe reinsurance program, and strategies to stabilize its surplus.
While these measures are showing some positive effects, AM Best noted that the impact has been slower than with Erie‘s competitors. This lag is partly because Erie utilizes 12-month auto policies with a “rate lock” feature, delaying the impact of premium increases. Continued severe weather in the first half of 2025 has further obscured underlying improvements in Erie‘s business.
In contrast to the Erie Insurance Group downgrade, AM Best affirmed the financial strength rating of Erie Family Life Insurance Company (EFL). EFL maintains a very strong balance sheet and adequate operating performance. Its rating also benefits from its strategic relationship with Erie Insurance Group.
EFL‘s strong risk-adjusted capitalization, conservative investment strategy, and improved operating results contributed to the stable outlook. While EFL experienced a net loss in 2024 due to a policy administration system write-off, it has recorded two consecutive years of pre-tax operating gains and strong earnings in 2025.
The ratings actions reflect AM Best‘s comprehensive assessment of Erie Insurance Group and Erie Family Life Insurance Company. The agency considered balance sheet strength, operating performance, business profile, and enterprise risk management.
